At Dundee Bank, we’re proud to celebrate creativity in our community. Our newest bus bench outside the Joslyn features work by local artist Avry Victor, whose colorful and playful style is designed to spark joy in the people who encounter it every day.
When asked what she hopes her art contributes to Omaha’s creative story, Avry shared:
“I hope it reminds people that there is still so much joy and whimsy all around them, especially here in Omaha.”
That sense of joy was at the heart of her vision for the bench design.
“I wanted to create something that was colorful and playful, where you pass by it and it brightens your day,” she said. “Because I knew it was going to be up in the summer, I used that as inspiration for my composition. When I think of summer I think of the sun and outdoors, hanging out with friends, and enjoying good food and conversation. I wanted my composition to feel how summer feels to me.”
The result is a vibrant piece that captures the energy and warmth of summer while creating a moment of delight for people moving through the neighborhood.
When thinking about how people might experience the artwork as they pass by the Joslyn, Avry hopes the piece inspires something simple but meaningful.
“I want people to feel a spark of joy, excitement, or creativity. When I see colorful art I have the urge to create. I hope that people feel that way when they see my work too. At the very least, I’d love for it to just make them smile and add a little color to their day.”
For Avry, public art plays an important role in helping communities connect with one another and the places they call home.
“Public art is so important for a community because it’s a reminder of who we are as people. There’s so many different things public art can convey; history, collaboration, celebration, life, or even just happiness. I think when we are exposed to it daily, we’re reminded of those things and it moves us to keep striving for more, whatever that may be.”
She also reflected on what it means to have her work become part of people’s daily routines.
“It’s very humbling and extremely exciting knowing that my work will be in a place where some people will see it daily on their commutes. Growing up I always wished there was more artwork surrounding me and my neighborhoods, so being able to contribute to that means so much to me. I hope public art continues to expand into neighborhoods across the city!”
