Smart Banking: Protecting Yourself from ‘Quishing’ – The New QR Code Phishing Threat

We believe in your digital security, and that’s why we’re here to shed some light on a new threat making the rounds — ‘quishing,’ a form of phishing via QR codes. It works by luring you to fake websites to swipe your sensitive information or drop malware on your devices. Here’s how to stay sharp:

  1. Examine the URL:
Glaring errors, substandard design, or websites without the ‘HTTPS’ prefix are potential indicators of a counterfeit site. Trustworthy websites usually exhibit a padlock icon beside their URL.
  2. Verify the URL Ahead of Time:
Most smartphones display the URL before loading a website. Taking a moment to scrutinize it can help discern if it’s a legitimate destination.
  3. Exercise Caution with Public QR Codes:
QR codes can be found everywhere nowadays — receipts, flyers and even your neighborhood light pole might feature one. Avoid scanning these codes unless their legitimacy is verified.
  4. Authentication Via Direct Contact:
If uncertainty arises, confirming legitimacy through direct contact, such as calling a known number can help you avoid this scam.

For added security, we advise using your smartphone’s native QR code reader. Refrain from downloading their-party scanning applications, as these may potentially pose security risks.

At Dundee Bank, we’ve got your back when it comes to keeping your information safe. If you have any doubts about a QR code or need a hand, we’re just a message away.
