What to Do After a Social Security Number Leak: How to Freeze Your Credit

A woman works on a laptop computer. Her brown hair blows in the wind.

At Dundee Bank, your security is our top priority. If your Social Security Number (SSN) has been compromised, freezing your credit is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from identity theft.

What is a Credit Freeze?
A credit freeze blocks creditors from accessing your credit report, preventing new accounts from being opened in your name. It doesn’t affect your current credit score or accounts.

Why Freeze Your Credit?
If your SSN is leaked, fraudsters could use it to open new credit accounts. Freezing your credit stops this by preventing anyone from accessing your credit file without your permission.

How to Freeze Your Credit:

  1. Contact the Three Major Credit Bureaus
    • Equifax: 1-800-685-1111
    • Experian: 1-888-397-3742
    • TransUnion: 1-888-909-8872
  1. Provide Information
You’ll need your SSN, ID, and proof of residence to place a freeze.
  2. Get a PIN
Each bureau will give you a PIN to manage or lift the freeze.

Monitoring Your Credit
Even with a freeze, keep an eye on your bank accounts and credit reports for suspicious activity. You can request a free report annually from AnnualCreditReport.com.

Need to Apply for Credit?
You can temporarily lift the freeze online or by phone when applying for loans or credit cards.

For any concerns or questions, feel free to contact Dundee Bank.
